Mac Tip of the Week: Unveiling the Secret of the Blue Dots!

Have you noticed that some of the application icons on your dock have blue dots under them? What do they mean? How can you make them disappear?

The Dock
The Dock
The blue dots indicate that although you may have closed an application’s window, it is still running in the background to provide quick access when you need it again. To completely exit from a program, without having it run in the background, you must quit it rather than close it. It is good practice to quit a program that you won’t be using again soon, so it can free up the computer’s resources.
To quit an application (and make the blue dots go away!), follow these easy steps:
Just like last week’s tip and with many tasks on the Mac, there is more than one way to do this. I have provided two ways, the “Quitting From the Application’s Menu” method and the “Keyboard Shortcut” method. The choice is yours!

Method 1: Quitting from the Application’s Menu

1) Locate the application’s icon on the Dock.

2) Click the icon to open the application’s window.

3) On the menu bar, at the top of the application’s window, click on the application’s menu. It is always the menu directly to the right of the menu.

For example, if you are in Firefox the menu would be:

4) Click Quit (Firefox). The name after “Quit” will change depending on the application.

If you quit an application whose icon resides in the dock, the dot will disappear, but the icon will remain. If you quit an application whose icon doesn’t reside in the Dock, the icon itself will disappear from the Dock.

Method 2: Keyboard Shortcut
1)  Locate the icon of the application on the Dock.

2) Click the icon to open the application’s window.

3) Use the keyboard shortcut:  Command KeyQ Key (Press the command button and hold it down while pressing the Q button).
If you quit an application whose icon resides in the dock, the dot will disappear, but the icon will remain. If you quit an application whose icon doesn’t reside in the Dock, the icon itself will disappear from the Dock.
